Beautiful Auckland Locations for Your Family Photoshoot

One of the best things about living in Auckland is the incredible variety of outdoor locations we have right on our doorstep. From wild west coast beaches to calm city parks and hidden green spaces, there’s a perfect spot for every family photoshoot style.

Choosing the right location plays a huge role in how your photos feel — relaxed, playful, intimate, or adventurous. Below are some of my favourite Auckland locations for family photoshoots, chosen for their natural beauty, space for kids to move, and gorgeous light.

Muriwai Beach

Best for: Adventurous families, beach lovers, golden light

Muriwai Beach is one of Auckland’s most iconic west coast locations, known for its dramatic black sand, rolling waves, and wide open space. It’s perfect for families who love movement — walking along the shoreline, kids running barefoot, and those in-between cuddly moments that happen naturally when everyone can just be.

The west coast light here is stunning, especially later in the day, and the open landscape creates photos that feel honest, emotional, and full of energy. Do keep in mind that it can be windy at times, which adds beautiful motion to photos but is something to dress for.

The Muriwai Gannet Colony

Best for: Scenic views, quieter moments, unique Auckland backdrops

Just a short walk from the main beach, the Muriwai Gannet Colony offers a completely different feel. With coastal walkways, rugged cliffs, and sweeping ocean views, this area is ideal for families who love nature and want something a little more unique.

The colony area tends to be calmer than the main beach and works beautifully for slower-paced sessions, especially with older children. While we keep a respectful distance from the birds, the surrounding landscape makes for an incredible backdrop that truly showcases Auckland’s wild west coast charm.

🐾 Dogs are not permitted near the colony to protect wildlife, so this area is best kept for human-only sessions.

Cornwall Park

Best for: Timeless family portraits, toddlers, relaxed sessions

Cornwall Park is one of the most versatile family photoshoot locations in Auckland. With open fields, tree-lined paths, and the iconic One Tree Hill in the background, it offers a calm, natural setting that works year-round.

It’s ideal for families with young children thanks to easy access, space to explore, and plenty of

quiet corners for relaxed moments together.

🐾 Dogs are allowed on leash in most areas and the park offers plenty of beautiful backdrops.

Riverhead Forest

Best for: Nature lovers, earthy tones, shaded sessions

If you love a forest feel, Riverhead Forest is a beautiful option. Tall trees, winding paths, and filtered light create a warm, cosy atmosphere that photographs incredibly well — especially in autumn and winter.

This location is great for families who enjoy walking together and want photos that feel natural, grounded, and a little bit magical.

The Domain works well for both playful family photos and more traditional portraits, depending on which area we choose.

Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park

Best for: Young families, calm sessions, central Auckland

Joseph Savage Memorial Park is a lovely hidden gem in central Auckland, especially well suited for relaxed family photoshoots with young children. The park offers open grassy spaces, gentle paths, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy for little ones to explore while we capture natural, unposed moments.

Its tidy gardens and greenery create a clean, timeless backdrop that photographs beautifully year-round. Thanks to its easy access and quieter feel, it’s a great option for families who want a low-stress session without travelling too far.

Many of these locations are also dog-friendly, making them ideal if you’d like to include your furry family member in the shoot. I always recommend checking leash rules and letting me know in advance so we can plan the session around everyone’s comfort.
